Roster Moves – August 20

PugliesePASCO, Wash. – The Boise Hawks, in conjunction with the Chicago Cubs, have announced four roster moves prior to tonight’s game with the Tri-City Dust Devils.

James Pugliese has been promoted to Class-A Kane County; pitcher Eddie Orozco has been removed from the seven-day disabled list and added to the Boise roster; catcher Cael Brockmeyer has been placed on the seven-day disabled list (retroactive to yesterday); and catcher Neftali Rosario has been sent to Boise from Class-A Kane County.

Pugliese earns his first promotion to a long-season team after posting a 4-3 record and a 2.32 ERA in 11 starts, tossing a team-high 62 innings and striking out a team-high 47 men.

Orozco joined the Hawks on July 17 on a rehab stint from Kane County, going 0-1 with a 5.59 ERA in eight appearances.  He will continue to be utilized out of the bullpen.

Brockmeyer2Brockmeyer was hitting .298 with five doubles and 13 RBI for the Hawks before he had to leave Sunday’s game after taking a foul tip off his mask.  He was placed on the disabled list as part of Minor League Baseball’s new concussion prevention program.

Rosario joins the Hawks after playing in four games at Kane County, going 2-for-9 in limited action.  The sixth-round pick of the Cubs in the 2011 draft from Puerto Rico spent last season in the Arizona Rookie League, hitting .214 with seven RBI.

The Hawks active roster now sits at 29, with one player on the disabled list.

Gretzky to Kane County, Brockmeyer to Boise

BD2_9648The Boise Hawks, in conjunction with the Chicago Cubs, have announced a trio of roster moves prior to the start of a three-game series with the Eugene Emeralds.

Outfielder Trevor Gretzky has been promoted to Class-A Kane County and third-baseman Kris Bryant has been promoted to Advanced Class-A Daytona, while catcher Cael Brockmeyer has been returned to Boise after a week with the AAA Iowa Cubs.

Gretzky is coming off a 3-for-4 game on Sunday night against Vancouver – upping his batting average to .256.  The third-year professional had four doubles and six RBI – and had hit safely in all 11 games he played at Memorial Stadium.

Bryant heads to Daytona after a stellar three weeks in Boise, hitting .354 with four home runs and 16 RBI in 18 games with the Hawks.  The second-overall pick in the 2013 draft heads to the D-Cubs riding a 15-game hit streak.

Brockmeyer returns to Boise after spending the last week with the I-Cubs, going 1-for-6 in two games in the Pacific Coast League.  He was hitting .306 with 12 RBI prior to the All-Star Break.

Goodbye to Kris Bryant

???????????????????????????????Boise Hawks fans knew that the time would come – for those of us around the game, we had three dates circled.  The day Kris Bryant would leave Boise for a bigger challenge up the ladder of professional baseball.

Many thought it would be August 5 – the first day of the All-Star Break. Others thought August 12, a off-day for the Boise Hawks, while some thought August 16 – the day the Hawks embark on the grueling Western Idaho Fair road trip.

August 12 was the day – as while he was enjoying a peaceful day at Roaring Springs in Meridian, the second overall pick in the 2013 draft learned he was headed to the East Coast to the Daytona Cubs.

Luckily for me, I had the opportunity to sit down with Bryant for a good nine-minute interview – and asked him some questions others hadn’t.  You can listen to the interview here – it will run tonight during the second segment of Hawkstown Tonight, along with a montage of Bryant’s top highlights as a Boise Hawk.

Truly a professional in all sense of the word – Bryant has the potential to be a superstar.  Big, strong athletic build; charisma; engaging; very intellectual; and can play the game.  The Cubs have themselves another star in the making – alongside the Almora’s, the Baez’s, and the Soler’s.

It was a fun ride – as Bryant leaves town with the third longest active hit streak currently in Boise Hawks history (Stephen Bruno still is riding a 22-game hit streak from last year, Matt Szczur hit safely in all 18 games with the Hawks in 2010).

Bryant Named Player of the Week

Bryant2Boise Hawks third-baseman Kris Bryant was honored today as Northwest League Player of the Week, announced by MILB.com.

The second-overall pick in the 2013 first-year players draft helped the Hawks take 4-of-5 games against the defending NWL champion Vancouver Canadians – extending his hit streak to 15 games, the longest in the league this season.

Bryant went 9-for-17 with three doubles, a triple, a home run, and five RBI – while drawing four walks.  He has raised his average to .354 – with 13 of his 23 hits this season going for extra bases and has a 1.108 OPS.  Yesterday, Bryant went 5-for-7 in Boise’s day-night doubleheader and drove in three runs.

The Hawks return to action tomorrow night, opening a three-game series with the Eugene Emeralds at 7:15 p.m.

Roster Moves – August 8

Arias5The Boise Hawks, in conjunction with the Chicago Cubs, have announced multiple roster moves prior to the series opener with the Vancouver Canadians.

Second-baseman Danny Lockhart has been sent to Boise from AAA Iowa; former Hawks pitcher Jose Rosario has been sent to Boise from Class-A Kane County; former Hawks pitcher Jose Arias joins Boise from Class-A Kane County; pitcher Rob Zastryzny has been promoted to Class-A Kane County; and catcher Cael Brockmeyer has been promoted to AAA Iowa.

Lockhart, selected to the NWL All-Star Team, played in two games for the I-Cubs, going 4-for-9 with a run scored in a series with Tacoma.  He was among the NWL leaders in batting average and hits prior to his promotion to AAA.

Rosario, who posted a 6-3 record for the Hawks in 2011, returns after recording a 0-7 record and a 7.38 ERA in 64 innings with the Cougars in 2013. The hard-throwing right-hander struggled with his command in Kane County, walking 42 men while striking out just 33.

Arias, returning from injury after making just two appearances early this season in Kane County, was 0-1 with a 2.53 ERA in six outings with the Mesa Cubs.  A year ago, the right-hander went 4-2 with a 3.25 ERA for the Hawks.

Brockmeyer2Zastryzny, the Cubs’ second-round pick from 2013, heads to the Midwest League after posting a 3.14 ERA in 14 innings of work with the Hawks.

Brockmeyer was promoted on Tuesday to Iowa after a rash of injuries at the catcher position and went 1-for-3 in his AAA debut – and has remained with the team back to Des Moines to open a series with Fresno.

The Hawks currently have a full roster of 30 players, with Shawon Dunston Jr. on the disabled list and Eddie Orozco in Boise on a rehab assignment.

Lockhart to AAA, Watkins to Big Leagues

LockhartEVERETT, Wash. – The Boise Hawks, in conjunction with the Chicago Cubs, have announced that Northwest League South Division All-Star Danny Lockhart has been promoted to the AAA Iowa Cubs, prior to their afternoon tilt with the Tacoma Rainiers.

No corresponding roster move will be made.

Lockhart will take the place of another former Boise Hawk, Logan Watkins, who was promoted to Chicago after an injury to Cubs’ third-baseman Luis Valbuena landed him on the disabled list.  Watkins, who is in the starting line-up for today’s series finale against the Dodgers, will become the 102nd former Hawks’ player to play in the Big Leagues.

WatkinsLockhart, the tenth-round pick out from Dacula, Ga., was hitting .309 with 16 RBI in 44 games with the Hawks – ranking among the NWL leaders in batting average and hits.  Lockhart had 16 multi-hit games for Boise, including five three-hit games in July, when he led the team with a .329 batting average.  A replacement for him will be announced later today for the NWL All-Star Game on Tuesday.

Watkins (right), who played for the Hawks in 2009, was hitting .243 with eight homers and 26 RBI for the I-Cubs prior to the promotion.  While in Boise, the Kansas native was the everyday second-baseman, hitting .322 with 14 doubles, 14 stolen bases, and 29 RBI in 72 games.

Day Games and Rain Outs

An Inside Look at EverettIt has been an interesting last week for the Boise Hawks – including a rare day game at home and a third rain out of the 2013 season.

When I saw the date of the Boise Music Festival fell on a home Saturday game for the Hawks – I remember calling Todd Rahr and asking him what the plans for the day were.  He said – Bark in the Park #2 and a day game.

The Hawks had their first Bark in the Park Day at the end of the 2011 season – a day game that had tons of meaning, as the team needed a win to clinch their first playoff berth in five seasons.  On an 85-degree day, a huge crowd turned out to watch the Hawks defeat Vancouver and celebrate the postseason bid.

Fast forward to Saturday – a day in which Dennis Miller was playing a concert in Boise, a huge Basque Festival was going on downtown, the Boise Open Golf Tournament was being played at Hillcrest, and 85,000 people were going to invade the Fairgrounds.  The morning baseball game was a huge success, including some awesome breakfast foods at the yard – the perfect tonic before an afternoon in the sun.  The fans were loud and got to enjoy the guitar riffs that were buzzing from across the access road.

Cool and Cloudy in EverettAfter winning their fourth home series out of their last five, the Hawks headed to Everett – which for a dozen members of the club, will be their home for the next week.  Weather in the North Puget Sound hasn’t been the best – cool and cloudy the first two days (in fact, the high temperature hasn’t climbed above 62, which is cooler than the low temperatures in Boise over the past month and a half).  Friday ushered in what folks around here call “Convergence Zone Rains” – as winds come down the Strait of Juan de Fuca (separating the US and Canada) through the Chehalis Gap at the southern end, creating unique weather patterns.  It meant a dreary, rainy day in Everett – and despite a game effort by the Aquasox grounds crew, the game was postponed.

With two rain outs in June, the three doubleheaders that will be played will be the most twinbills by the Hawks since the 2004 – which included a doubleheader in Everett that Boise swept.

?????ALL-STAR GAME: It will be an interesting experience for the eight players and the Boise Hawks staff that will remain in Everett for the first All-Star Game put on by the Northwest League since 2004.  The team will be treated like royalty at the Tulalip Resort and Casino in Marysville – players getting free access to a game room and big screen TV, while having the opportunity to go to Seattle and watch Monday’s Mariners-Blue Jays game.  All-Star Tuesday will start with a Home Run Derby – with Yasiel Balaguert representing the Boise Hawks, followed by the nine inning game which will feature Balaguert, Jacob Rogers, Lance Rymel, and Danny Lockhart in the starting line-up.

Boise Hawks Roster Moves – June 30

??????????????????????The Boise Hawks, in conjunction with the Chicago Cubs, have announced four roster moves prior to tonight’s series finale with the Spokane – with two players promoted to Class-A Kane County.

Cubs’ fourth-round pick, pitcher Tyler Skulina, and outfielder, Jose Dore, will join the Cougars this evening, while two former Hawks, pitcher Juan Paniagua and outfielder Kevin Encarnacion, return to Boise.

Skulina made eight appearances for the Hawks, recording a 1.20 ERA in 15 innings of work – including three shutout innings in his start last night. Dore, who was traded to the Cubs from the San Diego Padres during Spring Training, played in 29 games in Boise, hitting .200 with two homers and nine RBI.

???????????????????????????????Paniagua, who tossed a scoreless inning with the Hawks during the 2012 postseason run, has a combined 0-2 record with a 2.74 ERA in 23 innings between the Dominican Summer League, the Arizona League, and Midwest League.  The right-hander has one of the liveliest fastballs in the Cubs’ farm system.

Encarnacion opened the season in Boise, hitting .298 in 13 games, while hitting .217 with a homer and three RBI in 16 games at Kane County.

The Hawks roster currently stands at 30 players, with one player on the disabled list and another on a minor league rehab assignment.
